Pvt William W. Morang graduated from Custer County High School in 1938 where he was taking Trade and Industrial courses. He was working as a photographer in his father's photography studio when he enlisted in Missoula, Montana on 10 February 1942.

He served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy before his unit was sent to England in preparation of the invasion of Northern Europe.
