Pvt Charles S. Hodgins joined the Regular Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 17 May 1939. He was stationed at Fort Benning with an armored unit with the rank of master sergeant, and then asked for his transfer to paratrooper training, losing his rank and returning to private.He was a veteran of the invasion of Sicily, the Anzio bridgehead, where he was wounded a first time and the invasion of Normandy.
