Pvt Mart Smith's family name was orginally Roark.He enlisted in Abingdon, Virginia on 7 August 1943.
His company were involved in a fearsome close-combat battle for the Waal Bridge in Nijmegen. Pvt Smith was fatally wounded in the approach to the Waal Bridge.
