Pfc James A. Shough graduated from Albany High School in 1940, where he played basketball and baseball and was an actor.

He joined the Coast Guard of the National Guard in Marshfield, Oregon on 16 September 1940. He completed his training as a paratrooper at Fort Benning, Georgia and was assigned to the 462nd Artillery Battalion at Camp Mackall, North Carolina in 1943.

He was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Molenhoek, the Netherlands on 20 September 1944.
