Joe A. Elizondo enlisted at Fort Douglas, Utah on 2 November 1943. He was sent overseas in June 1944.

His brother, Cpl Arthur Elizondo, also served in Europe. His brother Sgt Raymond Elizondo also served with a paratrooper unit and his brother, Guadalupe Elizondo, was killed in action in Italy nearly a year before the death of Elizondo. He is buried at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettune, Italy.
