John Shimek attended Roosevelt High School and was employed by the city. He was a golfer and won two Ellis park golf tournaments and was runner-up in a city tournament.He enlisted on 25 June 1941 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was sent overseas in July 1944.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Molenhoek, the Netherlands on 23 September 1944.
