Pvt Charles Sarka attended Gary High School and was employed by the Norfolk and Western Railway Company and the U.S. Coal and Coke Company.

He enlisted in Huntington, West Virginia on 16 February 1943 and was sent overseas in June 1944.

His sister Marguerite Sarka served in the Womens Army Corps in Paris. They had the change to meet when they were both stationed in England.

He was initially buried at the Temporary American War Cemetery of Molenhoek, the Netherlands on 4 October 1944.
