More information

Mr. Paul Rump, his nephew, researched the Personal Record of Pfc Haring, and wrote the following report: "Uncle Don made three combat jumps with the 505/82nd in WWII (Sicily, Normandy, and Market Garden) and fought in every European campaign, including the Bulge, till the surrender of Germany. The 82nd was training for transfer to the Pacific, where he would have participated in the "jump on Tokyo", the invasion of the Home Islands, when Japan surrendered. He was on occupation duty in Germany when he died in a training jump accident, and if I read his death report correctly, his main chute didn't open, and his reserve chute got tangled, and he went in. I will admit I didn't tell my Mom and her sisters that part, I just said "training accident" and spared them the details they didn't need to hear."
