S/Sgt John J. Farrell Jr. graduated from Arlington High School and attended Boston College with the class of 1944, where he studied Latin and Greek. In January 1943 during his junior year, he and a group of friends decided to enlist in the U.S. Army.

He was declared officially dead one day and one year after he was reported missing in action.

His remains were located in Kommerscheidt, Germany on 24 September 2008 and were sent to the U.S. Army Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii for identification.

S/Sgt Farrell was given his final resting place at Highland Cemetery, Norwood, Norfolk County, Massachusetts on 30 April 2010.
