Both Pfc George J. Escobar's parents immigrated from Portugal. During the passage over the Atlantic Ocean, their son Jorge A. Da Silva was born. His name was later changed to George Joseph.Pfc Escobar was employed by the Atwood Machine Company before he enlisted in Hartford, Connecticut on 5 September 1942.
