More information
Pfc Ward was last seen guarding German prisoners at a command post in the town. Witnesses from his unit later reported that an enemy artillery shell struck that command post during a fierce German attack on the town. Eventually surviving members of his unit were forces to fall back and his remains were not recovered at that time. After the war, the American Graves Registration Service personnel attempted to associate Pvt Ward with unknown remains recovered from the Hürtgen Forest area, but were not succesful.
