S/Sgt Verdene A. Soellner attended Holstein High School. He was a great dancer and musician.

He enlisted at Camp Grant, Illinois on 17 March 1942.

About two weeks before his death he wrote in a letter: "I'm sorry I haven't written lately, but we've been very busy." At that time, he was engaged in heavy fighting. Sgt Soellner was Missing in Action for close to 9 years. Road builders discovered his remains and dog tags in 1953.

S/Sgt Verdene A. Soellner is remembered at Holstein Cemetery in Holstein, Ida County, Iowa with a memorial marker.
