More information
Pfc Charles H. Chenoweth Sr. was a restaurant owner in Chester before he enlisted in Clarksburg West, Virginia on 27 January 1944.He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously. The citation cited: When Pfc Chenoweth's platoon was isolated in a house by fire from a German machine gun, he dashed out of the house and engaged the hostile gun crew with automatic rifle fire. Firing from the hip, he stormed the German weapon killing its crew and wounding several others. As his platoon maneuvered under the cover of his fire, he was struck and killed by fire from an enemy sniper. By his superb platoon to move to a new position from which the German attack was repelled. Pfc Chenoweth's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
