More information

Lemuel Herbert enlisted on 16 April 1941 at Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.

During interviews after the battle, two men from his squad reported that they had seen him hit in the head and fall.

His body was not recovered due to the chaotic nature of the battle and the retreat of American forces from the town. In 1998, personnel from the German War Graves Commission recovered remains believed to be those of an American service member as well as an identification tag bearing Sgt Herbert's name in the town of Kommerscheid in the Hürtgen Forest. These remains and artifacts were turned over to American custody, and CILHI scientists used anthropological analyses and circumstantial evidence to identify them as the remains of Sgt Herbert.

Subsequent examination has concluded that he was killed as a result of shell splinters to the head.

Sgt Herbert is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
