More information

S/Sgt Waide H. Stivason enlisted in Butler, Pennsylvania on 17 February 1941.

He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for actions on 16 December 1944 in Germany. His citation cited: "When the Germans overran his mortar positions during the initial phase of their offensive in December, Sgt Stivason organized his unit into a rifle squad and vigorously defended the area against the overwhelming enemy forces. Aggressively leading his squad in the face of the heavy enemy artillery, armor and small arms fire, he inflicted several casualties against the enemy. An enemy artillery shell struck a dugout where Sgt Stivason had previously carried some of his wounded comrades and set the building afire. While extricating the injured men Sgt Stivason suffered wounds and severe burns. He became missing in subsequent action against the enemy. Sergeant Stivason's gallant and courageous action reflects great credit on him and the Armed Forces of the United States.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
