S/Sgt Charles J. Mc Keown joined the National Guard in Baltimore, Maryland on 3 February 1941. He first served with the 29th Infantry Division before he was detached to the Army War Show that toured the country. After the show closed, he was stationed at Fort George G. Meade and was sent overseas on 2 September 1944.

His sister Gladys served with the WAC and his brother John was sent to the Pacific. His brother Bernard also served in WWII.
