Pvt Edgar B. Johnson graduated from Washington and Lee High School in 1936 and attended George Washington and Columbus Universities. He was employed by the Bureau of Printing and Engraving.His family was not spared tragedy and adversity. During the Great Depression they lost their farm.
He enlisted at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland on 5 April 1944.
He was reported wounded in action on 28 January 1945. At that time his unit was engaged in the fighting north of Wereth, Belgium. The exact location where he died is not known.
His brothers John, Paul and Frank also served during the war.
August became a notable politician and scientist.
