Pfc Wilbur T. Fields was a hotel manager before he enlisted in Camden, New Jersey on 25 August 1943.

He was sitting in the back of a truck when somehow a wrecked friendly tank, towed by a recovery vehicle incidentally turned the turret, hitting the men, sitting in the back of the truck. Four other men were also killed during this incident, Michael F. Matysak, Howard W. Morrison, Charles P. Ricotta, Sidney W. Samuels.
