Pfc Virgil B. Carson enlisted in Denver, Colorado on 30 August 1943.

He was observing from his foxhole when he was shot in the head by small arms fire, probably a sniper. At that time it was impossible to recover his body due to intensive fire. Two men went to his aid, one was killed and the other wounded.
