Sgt William E. Bergman graduated from Central High School and was employed by the Ball-Band plant in Mishawaka.He enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 26 March 1942. He was sent overseas in April 1943 and was already a veteran of the African and Sicilian campaigns and also participated in the invasion of Normandy.
He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal the first time of wounds sustained on 15 June 1944.
His stepbrother Oscar B. Peterson Jr. was killed on 4 April 1944 and is buried at the American War Cemetery Lorraine in France.
Sgt Bergman was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Molenhoek, the Netherlands.
