More information

Pfc Theodore M. Wardwell Jr. enlisted in Cambridge, Massachusetts on 1 December 1942.

He was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming and at the age of 5 moved with his family to Wisconsin when his father accepted the city management in Rhinelander. He graduated with the class of 1942 in Rhinelander High School, where he was one of the most popular of the student body. He was active in band and intramural athletics. In the fall of 1942 he enrolled in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, preparing for a career in engineering. The following spring he entered service and was assigned to Camp Roberts, in California, for basic training. On completion of basic, he enrolled in the Army Specialized Training Program and assigned to City College of New York for engineering service. When the ASTP activity was curtailed, he requested combat assignment and was sent to Fort Bragg, where he was trained with a tank destroyer unit.

Pfc Wardwell went overseas in June of this year, arriving in England early in July. There he was transferred to the airborne infantry and his unit entered the fight for Europe in September.
