Pfc Leo J. Kasmer enlisted in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on 16 December 1942 and was sent overseas in April 1943, landing in North Africa. From North Africa, Pfc Kasmer saw action in Italy, before he was sent to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion.

His last letter home was dated 5 October, the day before he was killed in action. In it he said he was getting along fine.

He just had returned to active duty on 28 September, after recovering from wounds.

Pfc Kasmer was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Molenhoek, the Netherlands.

He is remembered at the St Joseph Cemetery, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.
