1st Lt. George W. Oliver graduated from Central High School and was a clerk with the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company.

He joined the National Guard at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio on 10 January 1942. He was commissioned at Fort Benning, Georgia on 17 September 1942, after which he was stationed in Alaska for eight months. He was sent overseas in July 1944.

On 12 September 1944, Lt Oliver was reported wounded in action a first time when he suffered wounds to the legs, stomach and back. After recovering, he returned to his unit.

At the time of his death the 10th Infantry Regiment was engaged in the fighting in the vicinity of Gondorf, Germany. The exact date when he was reported wounded in action and the exact location where he died is not known.
