1st Lt. William E. Coffey was a construction worker before he joined the Regular Army in Jamaica, New York on 24 February 1941.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Limey, France.

His daughter Margie was born on 21 September 1944, one day after her fathers death.

An American Legion Post on 10th Avenue, Brooklyn is called after 1st Lt William Coffey.
