Pfc Kenneth L. Beider worked on a farm.

He joined the Regular Army in Wausau, Wisconsin on 15 October 1940. Before he was sent to the European Theater of Operations, he served in Iceland for a year and a half.

He was hospitalized, once for slight burns on the right side of his face and a second time for rather serious flesh wounds in his right arm from gunfire, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for the first time.
