S/Sgt Ian K. Beatson He was an Ellet High School graduate and a former Beacon Journal carrier boy in his district. He was employed as a greenskeeper at the Brookside Country Club in Massillon before entering the army.

He joined the Regular Army at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio on 15 October 1940.

S/Sgt Beatson was first announced seriously wounded on 13 September. He died the next day. His mother had not seen her son for more than three years. He had served in Iceland, Ireland and England before going into the southern France invasion.

His family had relatives in Scotland, which he visited after arriving in the European area.

His brother David served with the Navy in the Pacific.
