Pfc. John D. Coale enlisted in the Regular Army at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 27 October 1940.

He was employed as a laborer for WPA County Roads.

He was first buried at the U.S. Temporary Cemetery St. James, St. James, France.

At the time of his death the 10th Infantry Regiment was engaged in the second battle for the Fort Driant.
