Pfc. Ira P. Tilley attended high school for one year and worked on a farm.

He joined the Regular Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 21 October 1940 and trained at various camps, especially Camp Custer, Michigan until January, 1942, when he was sent to Iceland, where he stayed until August 1943.

He was first buried at te Temporary American Military Cemetery of Limey, France.
