Pvt. James J. Troiano worked in a shoe factory before he enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 5 May 1943.

At the time of his death the 10th Infantry Regiment was engaged in the fighting in the vicinity of Pournoy–la–Chétive.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of St. James, France.
