Pfc Von O. Slinkard worked on a farm before he enlisted at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on 12 March 1943.

At the time of his death, the 10th Infantry Regiment was engaged in the fighting in the vicinity of Pounoy-la-Chétive, France.
