His name at birth was George James O'Leary but he became known as James O. Wilson.

He was employed at his father's appliance store.

He enlisted on 19 February 1943 and trained at Camp Croft, South Carolina, Camp Dix, New Jersey and in Georgia. He was sent overseas in January 1944.

Pfc Wilson landed on Utah Beach on 6 June 1944 and was wounded in action in the leg in Cherbourg, France on 7 July 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
