James Gilmartin graduated from Summit High School in 1943, where he managed the football team. He was employed by B. F. Schlosser before he enlisted in October 1944. He was sent overseas in February 1945 and was killed within a week of being deployed.His brother Daniel served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific.
