Pfc William J. Martin graduated from Troy High School and worked in a shoe factory.

He enlisted at Fort Niagara, Youngstown, New York on 24 February 1942.

He was reported seriously wounded in action on 10 June 1944 in France. After recovering, he returned to his unit. He was wounded a second time in France on 1 August 1944 and again returned to his unit after he recovered.
