More information
Owen Deal enlisted on 8 December 1943 and was sent overseas on 20 September 1944.His twin brother, Cpl Loran W. Deal, was stationed at Camp Hood, Texas.
Pfc Deal was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery Foy, Belgium on 14 February 1945. He was evacuated to Henri-Chapelle and was given his final resting place on 31 January 1949.
The IDPF contains the form "Request for disposition of Remains" whereupon his father indicated that he preferred that his son should remain where he already was buried. He mentioned there was a lot of controversy over his son's death and there were three versions of the war department and hospitals. The family doubted whether he was dead and feared receiving the body of someone else's son. This was written in January 1948.
The IDPF also indicates that he was reported mission in action on 9 February 1945 and died of wounds a day later. The mentioned location is Schönberg, Belgium. There are no other documents to verify that this location is right but it can be assumed that he must have been evacuated behind the lines to an aid station in this village. During that period his unit was engaged in the fighting some 20 miles east of Schönberg.
