Capt Robert W. Finley enlisted on March 1942. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in R.O.T.C. at Davidson College, where he received his degree at graduation in 1941. In March 1942, he was called to active duty and was in training at Fort Benning, Ga. Later he was sent to Oregon and then to cadre at Shelby, Miss., in May 1944, he went to the European theatre as a Captain in infantry, where he served in army intelligence.

Captain Finley early in life showed qualities of leadership and was one of the most favorably known young men in North Wilkesboro. He was president of the student body of North Wilkesboro high school, where he graduated in 1937, was a leader in Boy Scout activities and at the time he entered the service was Scoutmaster of Troop 36, sponsored by the Presbyterian church, of which he was a member.

In high school he was awarded the American Legion citizenship medal given to the student showing the most outstanding qualities of citizenship.
