S/Sgt Edward V. Mikolajczyk was employed as an orderly at the Hazleton State Hospital before he enlisted at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland on 20 January 1942 and was sent overseas in January 1944.

He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time for wounds suffered in action on 23 June 1944.
