More information

S/Sgt Lewis E. Humber enlisted at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia on 15 October 1940.
He was killed by a sniper in Germany when he jumped from his foxhole to rescue a wounded buddy who was crying for help.

He received the Bronze Star posthumously. The citation stated that in operations near Führen, Luxembourg on 21 January 1945 his unit met enemy machine gun and mortar fire so intense that his platoon was twice forced to withdraw, leaving many casualties on the field. Though devastating fire still rained upon the area, Sgt Humber volunteered to evacuate his comrades. He was able to drag al of the casualties to safety before rejoining his company.
