Sgt Joseph J. Straub attended high school for two years and was a messenger at the Pittsburgh Press newspaper before he enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 15 June 1942.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
