Pfc James O. Rose graduated from Harrisburg Township High School.in 1941. He was employed at the Illinois Brokerage before he enlisted.

He was sent to mathematics classes at Pasadena College as part of the Special Training and Reassignment Unit (STAR). Five months later, he participated in the Army Specialized Training Unit (ASTU) at the University of Oklahoma.
