Sgt Fred Ackerley was employed at the Austin Company before he enlisted on 1 April 1943. He was sent overseas in August 1944.Sgt Ackerley was manning an machine gun position when the Germans launched a vicious counterattack on the city, supported by tanks and artillery. At 7:30 an enemy artillery shell the position received a direct hit, killing him instantly.
