Cpl Robert J. Rayburn attended college for one year and was employed by the Duke Power Company before he enlisted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 15 June 1942. He was sent overseas in April 1944.

He was reported wounded in action in Haguenau on 24 January 1945 and died of his wounds on 26 January 1945.
