Pvt Joseph K. Messer attended high school for four years and was a clerk before he enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 5 June 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments to his chest and hand.

He is remembered at the Forest Grove Cemetery in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
