More information

"Mrs. Mattie L. Marshall, 114 1/2 North Vine street, has been informed of the death of her son, S/Sgt Woodrow W. Marshall, 29, who was killed in action in Germany on March 24. A letter from Lt Col John Hansen, commanding the 79th Infantry Division informs Mrs. Marshall that her son participated with assault forces assigned to the mission of crossing the Rhine river and capturing the city of Dinslaken, Germany. The enemy opposed determinedly but the city was succesfully taken, Col Hansen wrote. He said. "Your son was approximately 1,000 yards from the east bank of the Rhine which was under constant enemy fire when he was killed instantly by shell fragments. He was buried at the American cemetery at Margraten, Holland, with Protestant services by an Army Chaplain," Col Hansen said. S/Sgt Marshall enlisted three years ago and arrived overseas last September. He finished high school in Harrisburg, where he was born and reared, and attended the Southern Illinois Normal University of Carbondale for two years. At the time of his enlistment he was employed at the Horning hotel in this city as a clerk. His father, Jack Marshall, lives in Kentucky. He has a sister, Mrs. Bernice Circi in Chicago, and a half sister, Lorene Willis in Battle Creek, Mich. His mother and one of her grandchildren, Sylvi Circi, reside in the Oliver apartments and because Mrs. Marshall is ill with a heart ailment, her sister, Mrs. Sophia Alexander, who has three sons in military service has been with her for a few weeks. When the first official announcement came regarding the death of S/Sgt Marshall, it was withheld because of the serious condition of his mother's health."
