George was born at the family ranch on Cannon Road, San Benito County in California. He was the youngest of the Erbe family. He graduated from Hollister High School. He was working at the ship yards in Alameda when he enlisted on 26 March 1943. His basic training was at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and advanced training at Shrevesport Louisiana before going overseas in March 1944.
