T/5 James J. O'Rourke was a manager before he enlisted at Camp Perry Lacarne, Ohio on 2 December 1941.

Originally a member of a paratrooper outfit, O'Rourke sprained his ankle in a jump and was transferred to serve in another unit.

He became a radar specialist and instructor at Newport News, Virginia., before going overseas.

He also graduated from the anti-aircraft artillery training center school at Camp Davis, North Carolina in 1942.
