Pvt Frederick R. Petersen worked on a farm before he enlisted in Detroit, Michigan on 25 February 1944.

He was following his older brother, Clarence, who had enlisted in 1941, fought on the Island of Corregidor and survived the war as a prisoner for 36 months.
