More information

S/Sgt John Kobrish was a gardener before he enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 30 July 1942. He received his basic training at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He had been overseas two years.

Both his parents were born in Poland.

Sgt Kobrish was seriously wounded in action on 18 March 1945, in the vicinity of Orscheid, Germany and died of his wounds on 10 April 1945.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military of Ittenbach, Germany on 11 April, conducted by a Catholic chaplain.

The exact location where he died, but taking into account the location of the temporary cemetery and the place where he was wounded, the field hospital must have been stationed nearby.

At the time of receiving the wounds, he was a platoon guide with his company, at a newly-won position. Shortly after arriving at the position the company was subjected to intense enemy artillery fire. Fragments from one of the shells, which exploded nearby, struck S/Sgt Kobrish in the chest.
