Eugene joined the Regular Army at Camp Croft on 15 November 1941. He was recognized as an expert with small arms and won many awards as a member of the rifle team at Fort Niagara.
Sgt Lewis served as a cadre instructor at Fort Jackson, Camp Croft, SC, Fort McClellan, Al., and Camp Blanding, Fl. He went overseas in July 1944 and was killed in action at Pingsheim, Germany. He was married.
His brother Marion A. Lewis also died in WWII, somewhere in the Pacific.
