Pfc Russell G. True attended college for two years and worked on a dairy farm.

He enlisted in Sacramento, California on 20 August 1942. He joined the paratroopers but was transferred to the infantry after being injured in a jump. He first saw action in China and the Philippines and was wounded on 15 October 1944 in Germany for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
