Cpl Berry enlisted on 13 June 1942 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and was sent overseas in 1943.

Both his sons were put up for adoption. Lawrence Scott Berry was adopted by the Mrs. Ruth Strom Ballenger and William Robert Richardson of McCormick and Donald (Don) Berry was adopted by the Charles Vernon Shanfelt and Gladys Yarnell short after his birth. He never met his father, as he was born shortly after his father went overseas.
